Short version

  • You don’t need a studio. A current smartphone, stable internet, light from the front and decent sound are enough to start.
  • The platform decides how quickly anyone sees you at all — and whether you can earn from the very first stream or only after a hurdle.
  • Consistency beats production quality. Two fixed slots a week bring more than one perfect stream a month.
  • The first streams have zero to three viewers. That’s the normal case, not a sign that it isn’t working.

What streaming really means

Most guides on the subject start with equipment lists. That’s the wrong start, because technology is the smallest part. Live streaming is first of all: talking, reacting and keeping people company over a longer period — often without anyone answering.

Anyone who expects to have a community after the third stream usually stops after the fourth. Anyone who expects to broadcast for eight weeks to an almost empty room and still enjoy it, stays. It’s the most honest filter there is on this topic.

It’s a conversation, not a show

You don’t have to perform. You have to be reachable. The streams that work are the ones where someone really answers when something appears in the chat.

The first viewers are the hardest

Going from zero to three regulars is harder than going from thirty to a hundred. After that a lot takes care of itself, because a lively room attracts new people.

Time is the real investment

Not money for equipment, but several hours a week over months. If you can’t plan for that, start small instead of quitting big.

Gear: what you need and what you don’t

For getting started a simple order applies: sound before light, light before picture, picture before everything else. A noisy microphone costs you more viewers than mediocre camera quality.

Phone or PC

A current smartphone is entirely enough. Starting on a phone is the most uncomplicated way because you don’t have to set up any software. A PC only pays off once you stream games or want to work with scenes and overlays.

Internet

Upload matters, not download — and above all that it stays stable. Cable is better than Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi better than mobile data. A stream that drops every ten minutes costs you every viewer.

Light

One light source in front of you, not behind you. A window by day or an inexpensive ring light in the evening changes the picture more than any new camera.

Sound

A simple headset or clip-on microphone is the cheapest visible quality jump. The built-in phone microphone works, but picks up half the room.

Mount

A tripod or a clamp. A wobbling picture is tiring after ten minutes, and you have your hands free.

What you don’t need

Green screen, streaming PC, DSLR camera, overlays, alerts, your own logo. All of that comes later, if at all — and none of it gets you the first regular viewer.

Choosing a platform

This is where the decision is made that shapes your first months most. The platforms differ less in features than in how hard it is to be seen at all and from when you may earn something.

Platform typeFitsEntry hurdle
TwitchGaming and long talk streams on PCTo earn you need Affiliate status. As of October 2026 that takes 50 followers, 500 streamed minutes, 7 broadcast days and an average of 3 viewers within 30 days — Twitch can change the values.
YouTube LiveCreators who already upload videosLive works here mainly when the channel already has reach. As a pure entry point it’s the hardest route.
TikTok LiveShort, spontaneous streams from your phoneGoing live is tied to a follower threshold and a minimum age. The exact conditions are in TikTok’s guidelines and change regularly.
International live apps
(Bigo, Tango, SUGO)
Music, talk and entertainment via a gift systemLive immediately, but very many streams at once. Earning mostly runs through agencies with their own targets.
elPortalOVideo and audio streams from your phone, support in English and GermanNo follower threshold and no waiting period: gifts are possible from the first stream, and payouts start at €25.

One note that is rarely written anywhere: you don’t have to decide for ever. Many creators stream on two platforms in parallel and look after three months at where the people stayed.

Finding your topic

The usual advice is to look for a niche with little competition. In practice that leads to people streaming about things that bore them and giving up after six weeks.

The more useful question is: what can you talk about for 90 minutes without preparing? That’s your topic. It’s allowed to be unoriginal — there are thousands of gaming streams and new communities still form every day.

Gaming

The biggest area and correspondingly crowded. Works through your reaction, not your skill.

Music and singing

Sing or DJ live. Watch the music rights — more on that below. Which app types exist for singing is covered in the guide Karaoke app.

Talk

Talking, answering questions, telling about your day. Technically the easiest, in content the most demanding.

Creative

Drawing, crafting, sewing, building. Viewers stay unusually long here because there’s something to see.

Working along

Studying, programming, tidying. Sounds unspectacular and works surprisingly well as a calm companion format.

A mix

Allowed, as long as the tone stays the same. People come because of you, not because of the topic.

The first stream

  1. Set a date and announce it. A specific day and a specific time, posted once beforehand. Without an announcement you’re guaranteed to stream alone.
  2. Test the tech 20 minutes before. Record and listen back to the sound, check the light, have the battery and charging cable ready, mute notifications.
  3. Start with a greeting, even if nobody’s there. Streams are often discovered mid-action. Anyone who only talks once someone’s watching never gets discovered.
  4. Address every viewer directly. Read out the name, welcome them, ask a question. That’s the single most important move in the whole stream.
  5. Stay at least 45 to 60 minutes. Shorter streams are hardly shown by most platforms, and nobody has time to find you.
  6. Afterwards, note for three minutes what went well. Not what went badly — you know that anyway. What went well, you repeat next time.

The first 30 days

In the first four weeks almost everything is decided — not through viewer numbers, but through habits.

  • Two fixed slots a week. Always the same days, always the same time. Reliability is the only reason anyone comes back.
  • Don’t stream daily. Sounds counterintuitive, but it prevents the most common reason for quitting: exhaustion in week three.
  • Cut a short clip from every stream. The clip is the advertising, the stream is the product. A good phone and a free editing app are enough.
  • Be a real viewer in other streams. Watch, join in, link nothing. Anyone who advertises in other people’s chats gets banned and has gained nothing.
  • Count regulars, not views. Three people who are there every time are worth more than two hundred who scroll past once.

Earning money: how it really works

On live apps, monetisation almost everywhere follows the same pattern. The differences are in the hurdles before it and the conditions after.

  1. Viewers buy coins. These are in-app purchases. Watching itself costs nothing, and nobody has to buy anything to be there.
  2. Coins become gifts. During the stream viewers send virtual gifts. What each gift is worth is shown in the app.
  3. Gifts collect on your account. At elPortalO without an upstream follower threshold and without a probation period.
  4. You request a payout. At elPortalO from €25. The exact conditions are in the info area, not only on request.

What honestly comes with it

At the start these are small amounts. For the great majority, live streaming is not a replacement for an income but a side earning that grows with the community. Any platform that promises you something different is selling you something.

What’s realistic: that the sum rises over months if you broadcast regularly and the same people come back. What’s not realistic: a plannable monthly income from the first eight weeks.

More detail is in the guide to live stream monetisation.

The most common beginner mistakes

Quitting too early

By far the most common. Most quit in weeks three to five — right before the first regulars form.

Irregularity

Anyone who streams Tuesday one time, Sunday the next and sometimes not at all doesn’t build a habit. Rarer and reliable beats frequent and random.

Broadcasting instead of talking

If something appears in the chat and nobody responds, it’s not a live stream but a video with a delay.

Advertising in other streams

Works nowhere, annoys everyone and leads to bans. Real participation, on the other hand, does bring viewers.

Staring at numbers

Watching the viewer count during the stream makes you insecure and the stream worse. You can evaluate afterwards.

Too much tech too soon

Two weeks of building overlays are two weeks you weren’t live. Broadcast first, beautify later.

This section is orientation, not legal or tax advice, and the rules differ from country to country. As soon as money flows regularly, a conversation with a tax advisor in your country is the cheaper route.

Income is usually taxable. That also applies to gifts and coins that are converted into money, and even when the amounts are small. Depending on volume, a business registration can be required; for small turnovers many countries have simplified small-business rules.

Age limits and youth protection. Every platform sets a minimum age for going live and another for payouts. At elPortalO the conditions are in the terms of use and the community guidelines.

Music and other people’s content. Playing current chart music in the background, streaming movies or series alongside or showing other people’s videos is the quickest route to a ban. Use royalty-free music or music you hold the rights to — especially when you sing or DJ yourself.

Frequently asked questions

How many viewers does a beginner have?

In the first weeks typically zero to three. That’s the case for almost everyone and says nothing about the quality of your stream. What matters is whether those few people become regulars.

Do I need a PC to become a streamer?

No. A current smartphone is enough, and on live apps that’s even the intended way. A PC only pays off for gaming streams or when you want to work with scenes and overlays.

From when can you earn money with streaming?

That depends on the platform. Twitch requires Affiliate status with minimum values, TikTok a follower threshold. At elPortalO there is no follower threshold: gifts are possible from the first stream, and payouts start at €25.

How often should a beginner stream?

Two fixed slots a week, always at the same time, are better than daily streaming without a plan. Reliability is the reason people come back.

Do I have to show my face?

No. Audio formats, gaming without a camera or streams where only your hands are visible work. At elPortalO there are audio-only rooms for that.

Do you need a business registration to stream?

For occasional streaming without income, generally not. As soon as money flows regularly, a registration can become necessary. It depends on the individual case and your country — this page doesn’t replace tax advice.

Which platform is best for beginners?

If you want to start from your phone and earn without a hurdle, live apps are the easiest entry. If you stream gaming on PC and want a big gaming community, there’s little way around Twitch.

Does elPortalO cost anything?

No. Downloading, watching and going live are free. Money only comes in through coins that viewers buy voluntarily.
