Short version
- Tango started in 2009 as a messenger and has offered live streaming since 2017. It is operated by TangoME, based in Mountain View, California.
- The app combines public live streams with private 1:1 video calls. Watching is free; gifts and private calls run on coins.
- In Europe, the iOS version has been distributed since 2026 not through the Apple App Store but through the third-party marketplace Onside. Android and the browser version work as usual.
- As a creator you earn through gifts from your viewers. This is usually organised through agencies.
Transparency note: This page comes from elPortalO, a live streaming app. So we are not neutral — which is why further down we state openly what Tango is the better choice for and what it isn’t.
What Tango Live is
Tango started in 2009 as a messenger for video calls and text messages — long before live streaming was a genre of its own. The live section was added in 2017, and it shapes the app today: hosts broadcast from rooms, viewers watch, write in the chat and send gifts.
The second part of the app is private 1:1 video calls. Either you are connected with someone at random, or you start a private call with a host from within a live stream. This mix of public stream and private conversation sets Tango apart from pure streaming platforms.
Live streams
Public rooms with a host, chat and gifts. You swipe through the rooms like a feed.
1:1 video calls
Private conversations between two people, either by random match or directly with a host. Longer and private calls cost coins.
Gifts
Viewers send virtual gifts paid for with coins. The host sees who sent what.
How to install Tango
In most countries the installation is straightforward: on iPhone you get Tango from the Apple App Store, on Android from Google Play. There is also a browser version: Tango opens in Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox without installing anything. In the browser you can watch and make calls, but you can’t start your own stream.
One thing surprises many people in Europe: on the iPhone, Tango is no longer in the App Store in the EU. Since 2026 the app has been distributed in the EU through the third-party marketplace Onside, which became possible through the Digital Markets Act. So you first have to install that marketplace and then download Tango from there.
What that means in practice
An extra app marketplace on the iPhone is a hurdle many users don’t take — and a point to plan for if you want to bring your audience over from somewhere else. Anyone who is supposed to follow you on iPhone has to install a second app before they can even see your stream.
Coins, gifts and what they cost
The payment model is the usual one for live apps and works in three steps.
- Watching is free. Entering rooms, reading along and writing in the chat cost nothing.
- Coins are bought through in-app purchase. They are the currency inside the app. You’ll find the package prices directly in the app — they differ by country and platform.
- Coins become gifts or call time. Either you send a host a virtual gift in the stream, or you pay for longer and private video calls with them.
Important to know: coins are not a balance you can have paid back out. They are spending inside the app. Only on the host side does something arise that can be converted into money.
Earning money as a host on Tango
Hosts earn through their viewers’ gifts. Streaming itself isn’t paid — what matters is whether there are people in the room who are willing to send something.
On Tango, as on most large international live apps, this is organised through agencies. An agency takes you on, looks after you and receives a share. In practice that also brings targets: hours per month, days per week, sometimes revenue goals. How high these requirements are depends on the agency and is rarely published anywhere.
What we deliberately don’t claim here
Plenty of specific figures circulate online about Tango payouts, diamond rates and minimum amounts. We don’t repeat any of them, because we can’t verify them first-hand and they change regularly. If you want to start with Tango, get the current terms from the agency in writing before you commit.
Where creators hit limits
Tango works for many hosts, and nothing here is meant to claim the opposite. But the reasons creators still start looking around are strikingly similar — and almost none of them has to do with missing features.
Being seen at all
On a platform where people broadcast around the clock in every time zone, a new stream competes with very many others. The first regular viewers are the hardest part.
Rules you can read
A lot runs through the agency rather than through terms you can look up. Anyone who wants to know where they stand has to ask — and gets different answers depending on the agency.
Language and support
The platform is international in outlook. Support in your own language isn’t a given, and the community in your own stream is often mixed-language.
The iPhone hurdle
In the EU, the detour through a third-party marketplace costs reach, because not every potential viewer takes that step.
Alternatives to Tango Live
If you’re looking for alternatives, it’s worth first working out what you’re missing on Tango. After that, the recommendations differ a lot.
| You’re missing … | Then look at … |
|---|---|
| A bigger international audience | The established live apps such as Bigo Live or SUGO. More viewers, but also more competition. |
| Gaming streams on PC with overlays | Twitch or YouTube Live. Live apps aren’t built for that. |
| Community and support in English | elPortalO. The trade-off: the platform is younger and the audience smaller. |
| Earning without a follower threshold | elPortalO. Gifts are possible from the first stream, and payouts start at €25. |
| A normal installation on iPhone | Any app that sits in the App Store as usual — elPortalO, for example. |

Frequently asked questions
What is Tango Live?
Tango Live is the live streaming section of the Tango app, operated by TangoME. Hosts broadcast from public rooms, viewers watch, write in the chat and send virtual gifts. There are also private 1:1 video calls.
Is Tango Live free?
Watching and chatting cost nothing. Money comes in through coins, which are bought through in-app purchase and spent on gifts or private calls.
Why can’t I find Tango in the App Store?
In the EU, the iOS version has not been distributed through the Apple App Store since 2026 but through the third-party marketplace Onside. On Android, installation works as before through Google Play, and there is also a browser version.
Can you make money with Tango Live?
Yes, through viewers’ gifts. In practice this runs through agencies, which receive a share and set their own targets. You should get the concrete terms in writing before you start.
What are Tango coins?
Coins are the in-app currency. Viewers buy them through in-app purchase and spend them on gifts or longer and private video calls. They can’t be paid back out.
What is the best alternative to Tango Live?
That depends on what you’re missing. For the largest possible international audience, the established live apps are ahead. For a smaller room where you can be seen, written rules and earning without a follower threshold, elPortalO is worth a try.
Do you need an agency for Tango?
Not to watch or to go live occasionally. Anyone who wants to work seriously as a host there generally can’t get around an agency.
