Short version

  • Classic karaoke apps deliver a backing track and scrolling lyrics. You sing for yourself or for the people in the room.
  • Recording apps record your singing, often as a duet with an existing track, and you share the result afterwards.
  • Live apps have no backing track and no lyrics — but someone listens to you in real time and reacts immediately.
  • elPortalO belongs in the third group. If you’re looking for backing tracks and lyrics, you’re in the wrong place here, and it says so further down.

The three types of karaoke apps

“Karaoke app” is a catch-all term for three things that have hardly anything to do with each other. Knowing that beforehand saves you two wrong installs.

1. Backing track with lyrics

Classic karaoke: the app plays the instrumental version, the lyrics scroll along and are highlighted. Meant for home, parties and practice. The song catalogue is the actual product — and usually the reason it costs money.

2. Record and share

You sing to a track, the app records, you trim and post. There are often duet functions where you add yourself to an existing recording. The audience only comes afterwards — if at all.

3. Live in front of an audience

No backing track, no scrolling text. You go live, and whoever comes in hears you at the moment you sing. Reactions, shout-outs and applause come immediately. In return there is no safety net.

Which one fits you?

You want …Then you need …
To sing along at home or at a partyA backing-track app with a big song catalogue. Check which songs are included in the free part.
A recording you can postA recording or duet app. The quality of the audio editing matters more here than the depth of the catalogue.
To train your voiceAn app with pitch display and a practice mode. A backing track alone gives you no feedback.
Someone to really listen to youA live app. There an audience forms that reacts — and, at best, comes back.
To earn something with your singingA live app with a gift system. Recording apps generally pay nothing out.

The most honest shortcut: if something is missing when you sing at home, it’s usually not the next song in the catalogue but the reaction.

What you really need

For all three types the same order applies: sound before picture, stability before quality.

  • Headphones are a must. Without them the microphone picks up the backing track too, and an echo results. That’s the most common reason for recordings that sound unusable.
  • A simple microphone is enough. A headset or clip-on mic is the biggest audible jump. You don’t need a studio microphone at the start.
  • A quiet room instead of expensive tech. Textiles absorb reverb. A room with carpet and curtains sounds better than a tiled room with a good mic.
  • Stable internet if you go live. Upload is what matters. A stream that cuts out in the middle of the chorus costs you your listeners.
  • Battery and charging cable. Singing and streaming draw a lot of power. Sounds banal, but regularly ends performances.

Free, subscription or in-app purchases

Almost every karaoke app is free at first. The differences lie in what happens afterwards.

Catalogue subscriptions

Backing-track apps usually ask for a monthly or yearly subscription for the full song catalogue. Before you sign up, check whether the songs you want to sing are included at all — catalogues differ a lot.

Single purchases

Some apps sell songs individually. Pays off if you always sing the same five songs, and gets expensive if you browse.

Gifts instead of subscriptions

On live apps it works the other way round: singing and listening cost nothing, and money comes in through viewers’ virtual gifts. For you as a singer that’s income, not expense.

What you should look at in any case before paying: does the subscription renew automatically after the trial, and how do you cancel it? That isn’t in the app description but in the settings of your app store account.

Music rights: the point everyone overlooks

This is orientation, not legal advice — but it’s the point where most problems arise, and the rules differ by country.

Someone else’s song belongs to someone. If you sing a well-known song, it’s a cover version, and rights are attached to it. As long as you sing for yourself at home, nobody cares. As soon as you publish or broadcast live, they do.

A backing track from a karaoke app isn’t automatically free. That an app gives you the instrumental version doesn’t mean you may post the recording everywhere. The licence applies to use within that app.

What’s allowed on a platform is in its terms. Platforms regulate it differently. If you want to cover regularly, clarify this beforehand — at elPortalO the rules are in the terms of use (German) and the community guidelines.

The safe option remains your own material or music you hold the rights to. Anyone who sings their own songs doesn’t have this question at all.

Singing live instead of alone into your phone

This is where the disclosure belongs: this page comes from elPortalO, a live streaming app. So first, what we are not the right choice for.

When elPortalO doesn’t fit

We have no karaoke backing track and no scrolling lyrics. If you’re looking for an app that gives you the instrumental version of well-known songs and shows the text, take a classic karaoke app — that’s what it’s built for, and we aren’t.

Also, if you simply need a clean recording for social media, a recording app gets you there faster.

What elPortalO is made for

That someone listens while you sing. You go live with your phone, bring your own backing track or your instrument, and the chat shows immediately what lands. Whoever likes you sends a gift — that becomes a payout for you, from €25.

  1. Download the app and set up a profile. Free for iOS and Android, no follower hurdle beforehand.
  2. Prepare the tech. Headphones in, mic connected, phone set up, backing track ready.
  3. Go live and announce what’s coming. Whoever comes in should know in ten seconds what you’re planning.
  4. Keep going. Two fixed slots a week bring more than one perfect performance a month.

How getting started works overall is explained in detail in the guide Become a streamer. And if you want to measure yourself in front of an audience: the talent show “the neXt Star” (German) has singers compete against dance, comedy and more.

Frequently asked questions

Which karaoke app is the best?

That depends on what you have in mind. For singing along at home you need a backing-track app with a big catalogue, for recordings an app with good audio editing, and if you want someone to listen live, a live streaming app. There is no app that does all three well.

Are there free karaoke apps?

Almost all are free to start. The full song catalogue is generally paid, either as a subscription or a single purchase. On live apps it’s the other way round: singing and listening cost nothing.

Do I need a microphone to sing karaoke?

Not necessarily — the phone microphone works. Headphones, however, are almost a must, otherwise the microphone picks up the backing track and an echo results. A simple headset is the cheapest audible quality jump.

Can you make money with karaoke apps?

With classic backing-track and recording apps, generally not. On live apps with a gift system, yes: viewers send virtual gifts that can be paid out. At elPortalO from €25.

May I sing well-known songs live?

At home for yourself, yes. As soon as you publish or broadcast, copyright applies, and what’s allowed is set by each platform in its terms. Clarify this before you cover regularly — this page doesn’t replace legal advice.

Does elPortalO have a karaoke function with lyrics?

No. elPortalO is a live streaming app without a backing-track catalogue and without scrolling lyrics. You bring your own music and sing live in front of an audience.

How many people listen the first time?

In the first streams typically zero to three. That’s normal and says nothing about your voice. What matters is whether the few people become regular listeners.
